They did this in order to discredit the Revolutionary Army and to make it look like they were a threat to the World Government.

Kotetsu is a brave and inspiring young man. He is a valuable asset to the Demon Slayer Corps, and he is a role model for all who know him. He is a reminder that even in the face of great danger, it is possible to overcome fear and do what is right.‍

It's also possible that there are other reasons why Mappa is delaying Chainsaw Man season 2. Only time will tell when the show will finally be released.
